Indies making music that matters.

I just completed doing my usual blog run, checking to see what is going in the world of popular (regular) music. As I expected; nothing to report. I prolly have to drawback my expectations. No worries we'll be in the marketplace any day now.

Jewel brought an article to my attention on the alternative artist Res; who about 6 years ago had a couple of hot singles and a buzz going. Anyway, Res left a major deal after selling 300k units of her first album. Certainly not the millions that the major's hope to see from their preferred acts, but definitely a strong showing for a rookie out of the gate. After she completed her second album; the label chose not to release it. Not understanding her channel or her style, they chose not to market it nor support it. Instead of giving it to her fan base, embarking on a new path or blazing a trail; they instead kept the record as a ransom and agreed to release her from the overhead of a 1+ million dollar recoupable (ouch).

Fair trade? lol smiley face...

Res' saga is not unique; but is yet another example how the deals with majors can be disadvantageous to an artist, even when the artist herself feels that the relationship was a good one. In the age of 360 deal's, the next Gaga or Minaj or Will.I.Am will have to give 75% on everything and put up some dna and a kidney just to get played on a wack radio station that has no real interest or loyalty in their music let alone the artist (cause they dont play whats good; they play what's 'hot').

Bah. I guess I couldve just said that Indie's rock.
